Weep holes, garden beds and termite entry in Werribee

How landscaping can bridge a home's termite protection, and what to check.

Werribee 3030 · 26 March 2026

In short: A weep hole buried by soil or paving gives termites a hidden way into the wall.

What weep holes are for

Weep holes let moisture out of the cavity behind brick veneer. They need clear space below them so they work and so the edge of the slab can be inspected.

How they get buried

New paving, raised garden beds and mulch often lift the ground level after the house is finished. We have recorded weep holes far too close to the ground on established homes.

Why termites care

Termites need moisture and concealment. Soil against the wall gives both, and lets them pass the visible slab edge unseen.

Fixing it

Lower the ground, pull back garden beds and keep a visible inspection zone at the slab edge.

FAQ

Questions Werribee owners ask about this

How much clearance is needed?

The bottom of a weep hole is generally required to be at least 150mm above the ground, or 75mm on graded sites; your builder's details may vary.

Can you see termites in the wall?

Not directly. We look for signs and conditions, and use a thermal camera and moisture meter where useful.

Will you treat termites?

No. We inspect and report only.

Does this apply to new homes?

Yes. It is common within a few years of handover once landscaping goes in.
